Bex Burch’s Vula Viel burst out from London’s incredible jazz+ scene in 2015, incorporating minimalism and raw post punk energy alongside dynamic arcs of tension and ludicrous rhythmic changes.
Best translated as “good is good”, Vula Viel’s name originates from the Dagaare language, widely spoken in parts of Burkina Faso and Ghana, the latter of which was home to Bex Burch for a total of three hugely influential years.
Burch, who plays her hand-crafted gyil (Dagaare xylophone) partly like a percussion instrument, and partly like a synthesizer, joins drummer Jim Hart, who works tirelessly, finding endless rhythmic conversations and Ruth Goller with her powerful and unique voice on the bass. “This disarmingly honest and direct music, the unpretentious musicality and joy of playing, makes even the last jazz police dance.” -Thurgaukultur CH
