Consonance is a project exploring how artificial intelligence can visually interpret poetry. By combining the power of poetry with the infinite visual range of AI, we can create entirely original content that is simultaneously art, poetry and music.

Consonance is a collaboration between the writers at Seamus Heaney Centre and local company Armchair and Rocket, drawing on the unique talents of Belfast digital artist Glenn Marshall and his world-leading work in artificial intelligence.

For our first project, we have worked with award-winning poet Stephen Sexton to create 4 pieces that demonstrate the process and its potential. Each piece is between 1.5 minutes and 3 minutes long – individual works of art created by using Generative Adversarial Networks to produce images that are the best efforts of these neural networks to understand and illustrate poetry.
