ADrift is an audio-visual, environmental sound art performance.

It features a long-form, site-specific, livestreamed, sub-aquatic audio broadcast using hydrophones deployed from an open canoe drifting down the River Lagan through Belfast.

This live soundtrack will provide the underscore for a series of curated images of the Lagan and ecological conservation work undertaken by local canoeists on this stretch of the river.

Accompanying these narrative images, satellite images taken from Google Earth and other sources together with technical environmental data including sewerage drainage and CSO pipework mapping will provide an objective contrast raising the question of what constitutes knowledge of place.

Adding to the narrative, my GPS position will relay the scale and pace of my journey with the river.

The performance seeks to raise questions of knowledge, explicit, tacit and embedded and seeks to highlight the power of situated, embodied, multisensory perception in how we come to truly understand our impact on our environments.

This event is programmed as part of the Sonorities 2026 Climate | Sound | Action series in collaboration with Reach’26 Arts and Sustainability Festival.
