Exhibition

Black Metal Studies

Wed 15th – Sat 18th April 2026
Wed 2pm & 7:10pm, Thu-Sat 12pm-5pm
PS3

Michael Speers and Luciano Maggiore

A site-responsive performance and installation piece contemplating the kernel of black metal – using voices, electronics and charcoal.

Two scheduled performances on Wednesday 15 April are followed by public exhibition of the documentation of these performances and the physical traces they leave on the space.

Live performance will take place in 2 parts on Wednesday 15th April in PS3 space with a limited audience. These performances will be documented with video and audio, so doors will be closed at the times indicated below to minimise disruption.

Please only attend the live performances if you consent to appearing in a publicly exhibited black and white video documenting the performances.

Part 1: Doors open 1.50pm (close at 2pm) performance 2 – 2.30pm (Wednesday 15 April)

Two performers vocalise into resonant vessels with lavalier microphones inside as they scale the perimeter of the room, the signals of which interfere with the static sound. The performers make traces on the walls of the room during this performance using charcoal.

Part 2: Doors open 7pm (close at 7.10pm) performance 7.10 – 7.40pm (Wednesday 15 April)

A static noise signal plays into the space. Two performers vocalise into dynamic microphones as they scale the perimeter of the room. The signals of the mics are processed and obscured, the vocalisations increasingly silence the noise signal until it disappears. The performers make a second layer of traces on the walls during this performance using charcoal.

Part 3: Exhibition runs 12pm-5pm Thursday 16 April – Saturday 18 April

The video and audio documentation of the above performances will be publicly exhibited in the space on loop for the remaining duration of the festival, alongside the charcoal traces left in the space by the artists.
