Performance

TAC(I)ET - implied silence

Sat 18th April 2026
Performance 11.30am-12pm, Installation 12-1pm
Harty Room

Lola de la Mata

Performance starts at 11:30am. The instruments will be available for audience interaction from 12-1pm.

This is a performance version of the sound installation by the same name that will be running Wed-Fri in SARC.

A sound installation which will include 6-8 photograms, a glass hearing trumpet, and a custom metal instrument. Its unique scale was selected from recordings made at the Hudspeth Laboratory of Sensory Neuroscience, Rockefeller University, NY, of Lola’s spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs), which she experiences as tinnitus. These recordings won a Sound of the Year award last year.

TAC(I)ET, is a tactile surround experience vibrating air, encouraging the ears in attendance to play additional tones forming a uniquely un/over-heard composition.

TAC(I)ET received a first performance on August 30th 2025 at Bridewell Studios in Liverpool. In the performance photograph (above right), Lola can be seen playing a custom instrument – the Tacet Friction Harp, developed in collaboration with percussion maker Matt Nolan.
