Marcel Sagesser aka Marcel Zaes



Biog

Marcel Sagesser is a Swiss-born sound researcher and artist who received his PhD in Computer Music and Multimedia from Brown University in 2021. Currently, he is Assistant Professor of Media Arts and Technology at SUSTech School of Design in Shenzhen. Under his artist moniker ‘Marcel Zaes’ he has internationally performed, exhibited, and composed works that often blend generative, self-coded sound algorithms with human made and organic sonic matter. His work, both in research and creative practice, aims at challenging conventional notions of technology and specifically the technologies of sound (re)production, while putting emphasis on what humans do with them. Current work focuses include defiant drum machines, rhythm grids, digital materiality and participatory culture. Marcel’s work was recently shown at Gray Area San Francisco (2021), International Computer Music Conference (2021), Fridman Gallery New York (2020), University of Chicago (2020), Columbia University (2019), and Lisbon Biennial of Contemporary Arts BOCA (2019).
